Additional thoughts

One of the most mysterious things I can remember about Sept. 11, 2001, is Where is George Bush? We kept hearing that he been in a Florida school room and had taken off in Air Force 1 for some undisclosed location. In the meantime, Dick Cheney was running the war room in the White House and gave the actual order, according to the 9/11 Commission report, for U.S. Air Force jet fighters to fire on commercial airplanes that invaded D.C. air space without obeying turn back orders. It was already too late, but no one in command knew that and the order was issued. If Bush is such a great leader and in charge of the government, where was he on Sept. 11, 2001? Why did he seem to be out of touch with his own command centers? Why did Cheney seem to be in command, when Bush is the President? Interesting questions.

Another rumor has surfaced in comments on another Blog. Apparently several weeks ago, two or four depending on the source, the Pakistanis captured some significant, high-ranking Al Qaeda leaders. The rumor coming out of a Russian newspaper report and other sources claims that one of those leaders could be Osama Bin Laden. The Pakistanis have been known to keep the lid on the capture of a major terrorist for several weeks, such as the one they finally announced holding during the Democrat convention. It didn't have much of an impact because few people knew his name. But if they announced Bin Laden's capture three days before the election, would that have a different influence? Would they do that? Would the Bush administration ask the Pakistanis to do that? Nah!

I don't know, Chuck. Do you think the White House should be accounting for our national security plan involving the president in case of an attack?

I guess some folks would like to think he was out behind some shed, hunkered down and sucking his thumb....

Given the obvious skepticism about such an event I think it would blow back on the administration rather than gain them votes.

Drawing another blank there, bud...........

Bedrock: You may be right, but according to the 9/11 commission report, the public did not know where Bush was but neither did the people he was supposed to be in charge of. He let the Secret Service and the vice president keep him out of touch during a critical period in the life of this nation.

And one reason for posting the October surprise stuff is so that people are familiar with the idea.

Chuck I posted a story by an AP reporter who was on the plane with Bush on 9/11. Her story appeared two days later.

It is complete and details all the stops and activities.

Did you see it?

Yes, I did. And it still doesn't answer what the 9/11 Commission says was a large period of time, during the crucial first moments (and I'm not talking the 7 minutes, that Bush was out of contact with D.C.

What's a "large period of time"? Do I remember right that Air Force One went on radio silence for a period until it could climb out of range of a suicide aircraft or shoulder fired missle?

I honestly don't see the big problem here. We had an effective and knowledgeable vice president to make those few decisions that needed to be made during that time.

Compare that situation with a "God forbid" Kerry presidency and a novice like John Edwards in command.....
